Two more agencies sign up for new generation of satellite images

April 29, 2008

Two more federal and provincial government agencies will take advantage of a new generation of satellite orthoimagery.

Public Safety Canada and the Saskatchewan Research Council recently signed agreements to use the GeoBase SPOT 4 and 5 - derived medium resolution orthoimages which improves upon the resolution of previous orthoimages.

Orthoimages are used in a wide variety of applications such as mapping, agriculture, forestry, geology, land use planning and management, maritime monitoring, disaster management, defence and security.

As well, the SPOT orthoimagery can be integrated with other geospatial data such as the GeoBase National Road Network, National Hydro Network, Digital Elevation Data, Geographical Names, Geopolitical Boundaries, and Geodetic Network Data.

Availability of the higher quality orthoimagery is made possible through collaborative agreements among Natural Resources Canada, other federal agencies, plus provincial and territorial governments, with the support of GeoConnections.

The first 1,000 of approximately 5,000 orthoimages providing coverage of all of Canada south of the 81° N parallel were released in January on the GeoBase website.

Along with a map index and technical specifications, the new images are available without cost or restrictions, and under common licensing terms.
