New GeoBase data layers available!

June 9, 2009

Land Cover

The GeoBase Land Cover data layer is the result of collaborative work between Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC), Natural Resources Canada (NRCan), the Canadian Space Agency and Canadian provinces and territories. Specific land classification processing was carried out by AAFC and NRCan's Canadian Forest Service, Canada Centre for Remote Sensing, and Centre for Topographic Information - Sherbrooke.

This data is an integrated national layer built from various sources of classified land cover data. It is provided in vector format, derived from Landsat-5 and Landsat-7 satellite imagery collected between 1999 and 2003. It is downloadable in 1:250,000 scale tiles.

Aboriginal Lands

The addition of the Aboriginal Lands data layer to GeoBase has been achieved through collaborative effort between Natural Resources Canada's Surveyor General Branch, the Centre for Topographic Information - Sherbrooke and GeoConnections. This data layer is one of several new administrative boundary data layers planned for inclusion in GeoBase.

Aboriginal Lands data can be downloaded in 13 data sets - by province or territory (excluding Nunavut) or for all of Canada. It replaces the corresponding Canada Lands Administrative Boundary (CLAB) which has been available on the GeoGratis web site.
